"Can’t Pretend," the third single from Graham Hill’s upcoming album, Isotropes, is a somber duet with vocalist Maggie Koerner, whose resume includes The Revivalists and Galactic. The aching, shimmering ballad has a cinematic lilt, as two souls yearn for connection while pondering the world’s fate. “Should I say hello / or wave goodbye?” What begins as a simple question becomes a haunting refrain, apropos in our modern age of uncertainty. As the song builds toward hope, the final lyrics call back to the precipice of despair: “The first thing that we share may be the end.”
lyrics
The moon is rising so
Cast your eyes on a
New horizon
As day becomes night
I hope that we might
Find another way
I don't care where you come from
We all go the same direction
First thing that we share may be the end
Seven now eight billion reasons why
We’re here to live, we’re here to die
We need each other, that we can't pretend
We’re on the road together
But will it last forever?
Should I say hello, or wave goodbye?
And if we crash together
We’ll meet above the weather
Should I stay below, or touch the sky?
We all know, where we came from
World has turned, the same direction
Never thought that this would be the end
Seven now eight billion asking why
The will to live, will I survive?
We need each other, that we can't pretend
We’re on the road together
But is it getting better?
Should I ride the waves, and race the tide?
You wanna be together
To make it last forever
Could I hold you close, and waste your time?
You wanna live forever
Pretend the end is never
Could I find a road, through space and time?
Until the end together
We’ll meet above the weather
Should I stay below, or touch the sky?
Should I say hello, or wave goodbye?
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)
I don't care where you come from
We all go the same direction
First thing that we share may be the end
